Vital for the cardiovascular system, growth of skeletal muscle, nervous system and retina
What is Taurine?
The chemical name for Taurine is 2-aminoethanesulphonic acid. It contains a sulphonate group and therefore is called an amino sulphonic acid. Even though it is widely considered an amino acid this is incorrect as it lacks the carboxyl group. Taurine is synthesized in the liver from Cysteine and stored in the gall bladder. Taurine is a major constituent of bile, which helps in the digestion and absorption of fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. High concentrations of Taurine have also been found in the large intestine, brain and skeletal muscle. As Taurine can be synthesized in the body it is considered non-essential, however some healthcare practitioners consider it semi-essential.
What does Taurine do?
Taurine is vital for the cardiovascular system and essential for growth of skeletal muscle, the nervous system and retina.
A high amount of Taurine intake comes from the consumption of red meats and seafood.
